overview

The unification of Cameroon in 1962 has seen Cameroonians enjoying its freedom from both the French and the English rule. although certain cultures such as the English style of learning is still being incorporated in Cameroon, it has continuously enjoyed that freedom. however, with a dominant one party with a long standing president of 32 years, the efforts of the Bameleke's who fought the great independence movement seems to be going in vain.  Cameroons economic depression which started in 1987 till now posed by the president to have resulted from rise in prices, had detrimental effects on the general populations. it saw civil servants who were forced into retirement, school closures, decrease in government spending, rise in poverty rates and as a result, a rise in anti- government feeling and protest. with a president incapable of receiving foreign aid at first was left with substantial debt and have been left since with trying to reduce. A country of only 23m people, is now divided and the southerners demanding for separation on the grounds of maltreatment of its citizens by the French Cameroons, deprivation of it's own resources, oppression, the fact that the unification was initially not a treaty and the french claimed of the south was illegal and forceful. frustration at the government, corruption, poverty has led to demands by the southern Cameroons to be separated from the north and being left with the 13 regions in the south. further demands for regions is being echoed. like all fight for independence, the recent happenings in Cameroon have seen protest which are slowly turning violent, this has spread over countries like Germany, Sweden, and a petition have been made for the UK's parliament to have a debate about the issue in parliament.
